Marathon Key is located in the middle of the Keys, just about at the halfway point between land and Key West. So, if you are doing a drive from Miami to Key West, be sure to make a stop in Marathon and visit some of these incredible beaches.
This area of Florida is prime for snorkeling, kayaking, swimming and any other water related activities. So, head out to the beaches in Marathon and enjoy a beautiful day in the sun.
Sombrero Beach

Out of the two public beaches on Marathon Key, Sombrero Beach is the best. It is a long, crescent-shaped beach that has soft white sand and beautiful clear blue water. Although the Florida Keys aren’t known for having great beaches, this beach just might change that around.
Beach goers can sunbathe, swim, and snorkel all around this beach. There is plenty of room for everyone since it is one of the bigger beaches of the area. On one end, you’ll find rocky reef which is a great place to snorkel to see the tropical fish and other marine life. The only downside is if you do swim out further, you will be met with sea grass at the bottom.
Past the rocky reef, there is a dock which makes for a great place to launch your small boat or kayak. It is also a good place for fishing so you will see some people trying their luck for a catch of the day.
The beach has nice facilities including free parking, restrooms, picnic pavilions, showers, volleyball courts, and a children’s playground.
From April through October, it is Loggerhead Turtle season there so it is very possible to see some turtles. Their nests are usually blocked off and protected so watch for turtles with care when you visit.
Coco Plum Beach
Coco Plum Beach is the other beach option if you’re staying strictly on Marathon Key. This beach is lovely for a walk along the coast but it is not ideal for swimming. You can launch a kayak or paddleboard and enjoy the day out on the water instead.

With a few amenities like parking, restrooms, shower, and a small picnic area, this beach is a great place to enjoy. Bring along your pet best friend, since the beach is dog friendly, but don’t forget the leash.
Bahia Honda State Park

Located on Big Pine Key with just a short drive away from Marathon, is Bahia Honda State Park. It is a hidden gem in the Keys with the best beaches you can find in the area. There are three main beaches in the park to explore so you can pick your favorite one to hang out on.
Sandspur is the largest beach in the park with the most amenities and perhaps the most beautiful of the three. Hurricane Irma did damage this beach and left a large amount of seaweed on its shores, but it has been returning back to its former glory. There are restrooms and showers by the beach.
Calusa and Loggerhead beaches are located towards the southernmost point of the island. At Calusa beach the water is calm so it makes the perfect setting for families with little ones. In the background, you will see the historic Bahia Honda Bridge which you can also walk on after enjoying the beach. The parking lot is just a short walk away as well as restroom facilities.
The park opens at 8AM until sundown every day of the year and has a fee of $8 per vehicle. There are concessions, kayak and snorkeling gear rentals if you don’t have your own gear.
